The municipality's decision to ban begging in Portofino, one of Italy's luxury tourist centers, has sparked controversy.
According to Independent Turkish, the decision to prevent homeless people from asking for money, especially from tourists, was presented to the city council on May 19 by Mayor Matteo Viacava. Under the new summer regulations, begging is banned in tourist areas, including the port and the historic center, during the high season from July 14 to September 30.
Antonio Mumolo, president of the Avocato di Strada (Street Lawyers Association), called the new rules “illegal” and threatened legal action if they were not withdrawn or amended within 15 days.
