Tourism in Germany in May, 2.6% fewer overnight stays than in the previous year

In May 2025, accommodation providers in Germany recorded 47.5 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests.

According to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was 2.6% less than in May 2024. One reason for this decline could be the later Whitsun vacations in some federal states this year, which were mainly in May in 2024 and mainly in June in 2025.

Overnight stays by guests from abroad in May 2025 slightly above previous year's level

The number of overnight stays by visitors from Germany fell by 3.3% year-on-year to 40.0 million in May 2025. In contrast, the number of overnight stays by guests from abroad rose by 1.5% to 7.6 million.

January to May 2025: Overnight stays slightly below previous year's level

In the first five months of 2025, accommodation providers recorded a total of 173.0 million overnight stays, slightly fewer (-0.8%) than in the same period of the record year 2024. The number of overnight stays by guests from Germany fell by 0.9% to 144.3 million compared to January to May 2024, while the number of overnight stays by guests from abroad fell by 0.3% to 28.7 million.
