Venice protesters claim victory in Bezos-Sanchez wedding venue change

1 min read

The wedding of US billionaire Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez in Venice, Italy this week has been moved to a more isolated and hard-to-reach part of the city due to security concerns.

The wedding of US billionaire Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, to which many world-renowned names were invited, was moved due to protests and security concerns. According to reports in the US press, Bezos and his fiancée, who preferred the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, a medieval religious school building in the Cannaregio district of Venice, changed the plan due to concerns about protests.

Some groups complained that the planned wedding in the historic city, famous for its gondolas and palaces, would turn Venice into an entertainment area for the rich, and threatened protests and blockades over the wedding.

The wedding ceremony, the exact date and location of which have been kept under wraps, is expected to take place between Thursday and Saturday and the guests are expected to move to a hall in the historic Venetian Shipyard in Venice's Castello district after the ceremony. The venue, which is surrounded by water and inaccessible by land when bridges are removed, is considered much safer than the historic school building in the Cannaregio district.
