In the city center of Barcelona, one of Spain's world-renowned tourist destinations, a protest was organized against the growing impact of mass tourism on local communities.
Organized by the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic, the demonstration included symbolic actions such as water pistols, taping off hotel entrances and setting off smoke bombs near luxury stores, The Guardian reported.
Activists say tourism is driving up housing costs, damaging the environment and displacing residents. Similar demonstrations have been organized in other parts of Spain, including Granada, Ibiza, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and San Sebastian.
